PIANC U.S. to Host SMART Rivers 2017

The U.S. Section of PIANC is pleased to announce that we will be hosting the SMART Rivers 2017 Conference in the United States. Additionally, we are thrilled that Jim McCarville, one of the SMART Rivers founding fathers, will serve as the conference chair. Under his leadership, the organizing committee held its first planning meeting in January 2016. A location and date for the conference have not yet been set, but the committee is targeting the fall of 2017.

The SMART Rivers Conference series is a biennial forum bringing together those involved in river transport from developing and developed countries around the world. The conference started as an initiative of major international organizations in the field of Inland Water Transport to promote transport by barge. The first conference was held in 2005 in Pittsburgh, PA. The SMART Rivers series is now placed under the umbrella of PIANC, the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure. Subsequent conferences in the U.S. have been held in Louisville, KY, and New Orleans, LA. In Europe, they have been located in Brussels, Belgium and Vienna, Austria. The most recent rendition took place in Argentina. Please see SMART Rivers 2015 for a list of technical topics and to download the technical papers from the conference in Buenos Aires (September 7-11, 2015).
