PIANC USA Technical Breakfast at the Ports Conference in New Orleans

Join us for a free technical and networking breakfast during the Ports 2016 Conference on the morning of Tuesday June 14th where the PIANC Working Group 181 members will give a presentation on "The State and Perspectives of Waterborne Transport Infrastructure Worldwide." The morning will kick off with a networking event with a light breakfast (and plenty of coffee). Major General Donald E. (Ed) Jackson Jr., USACE Deputy Commanding General for Civil and Emergency Operations (DCG-CEO), will then introduce US Commissioners Nicholas Pansic, Mike Leone and Ron Coles, who will speak about the status of Working Group 181's research and analysis.

It began a couple of years ago at the 2014 33rd PIANC World Congress in San Francisco when the Annual General Assembly passed a resolution to form a working group on the "State and Perspectives of Waterborne Transport Infrastructure Worldwide." WG 181 was charged with gathering relevant information on the global needs for new or existing waterborne transport infrastructure, including investment levels and operation & maintenance costs as compared to other transport modes, and assimilating this information into a database that organizes and presents it in a meaningful way. The Task Force is also investigating emerging trends and new technologies affecting the development of waterborne transport infrastructure worldwide. Work products will include:

  • Country profiles for 37 PIANC countries around the globe, summarizing the state of the waterways and ports in each country;
  • An inventory of needs for the waterborne infrastructure in the coming years, with an assessment of the gap between the identified needs and the current investment, and the socio-economic benefits of closing the gap; and
  • Guidance on how best to address emerging trends and technological advances in the waterborne transport infrastructure arena.

The team of speakers will present an update on the progress of the work, including some initial findings, with a particular focus on factors most affecting US ports and inland waterways.
