PIANC USA 2012 Annual Meeting – RSVP Now!

Join your colleagues in the navigation/maritime community and RSVP for the PIANC USA 2012 Annual Meeting and Networking Reception. Registration fee of $95 includes Opening Plenary luncheon, ethics & technical sessions, coffee break, and evening networking reception. Registration deadline is August 22, 2012. Attendees can earn up to earn up to 6 PDHs (including 2 Ethics PDHs). New events are still being added to the agenda, so keep checking the event page for updates.

PIANC USA Schmeltz Appointed as New U.S. Commissioner

PIANC USA welcomes Mr. Edward J. Schmeltz, P.E., D.CE, D.OE, D.PE, D.NE, F.ASCE, AECOM to the PIANC USA Commission. He was selected to replace Mr. Dom Izzo, KBR, whose term just ended. He will serve a four-year term, which began on July 1, 2012. Commissioners serve as delegates to the Annual General Assembly; actively support PIANC; promote membership; assist with technical meetings and conferences; and provide direction to PIANC USA in accomplishing its mission.

Smart Rivers 2013 Call for Abstracts

Smart Rivers 2013 is currently accepting abstracts! See the Call for Abstracts brochure for the conference themes. Abstracts must be written in English and are limited to 500 to 750 words and shall not include illustrations. Abstract submission deadline is January 2, 2013. Abstracts are to be submitted to the chairman of the Scientific Commission, Prof. Ph. Rigo and Ms. M. Wolters.

Navigation Engineering Certification News

Kelly Barnes, of PIANC USA and the USACE Institute for Water Resources, recently joined the Academy of Coastal Oceans Ports & Navigation Engineers (ACOPNE) Board of Trustees as a member. ACOPNE complements the Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute by bestowing Specialty Certification to those who have excelled in one or more of COPRI's sub-disciplines. This year’s induction ceremony for diplomates being granted certification will be taking place at Dredging 2012. Attendees of Dredging 2012 or the PIANC USA 2012 Annual Meeting can receive 2 hours of "ethic credits" Professional Development Hours by “Ethics, Engineers and Experts: To Whom Do You Owe What And Who Is Your Master?”

Call for 2013 PIANC Marina Excellence Design Jack Nichol Award

The call for applications for the 2013 PIANC Marina Excellence Design Jack Nichol Award is now open. The purpose of the award is to recognize excellence in the design of modern recreational boating facilities around the world.  The deadline to submit an application is September 28, 2012.

Upcoming Webinar: Navigation Engineering – Challenges for the New Decade

This webinar will present many of the challenges facing navigation engineering practice for the next decade and considers courses of action for practitioners. The webinar takes place on Thursday, August 23, 2012 at 12:00pm – 1:00pm. The webinar will be beneficial to those who work in the maritime commerce private sector, engineers in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Coast Guard, NOAA, other government agencies involved with navigation engineering, and also to those who advise these organizations, such as attorneys, business consultants and technologists. National Waterways Conference 2012 Annual Meeting

ASBPA 2012 National Coastal Conference: Rising to the Challenge

Join the American Shore and Beach Preservation Association on October 9-12 in San Diego CA for three days of coastal science, policy, technology and politics following this year’s theme of “Rising to the Challenge.” The sessions will emphasize recognizing that as priorities change due to economic, environmental, political and other constraints, we face increasing challenges as we strive to protect and maintain our coastal areas, and that we need to rise to these challenges in positive ways through increased collaboration and more intelligent efforts. U.S. Port and Inland Waterways Modernization: Preparing for Post-Panamax Vessels Webinar

The Panama Canal Study hosted a webinar on the U.S. Port and Inland Waterways Modernization report on July 19, 2012. The report provided an analysis of the challenges and opportunities presented by the post-Panamax vessels, and outlines options on how the nation might address the port and inland waterway infrastructure needs required to accommodate these new vessels. The webinar described the observations and findings of the report and fielded questions from the participants. The webinar presentation is posted on the study's web page.

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) New York District and its regional partners are actively committed to achieving the vision of a “World Class Harbor Estuary.” This vision balances the economic revitalization of the Port of New York and New Jersey with ecosystem restoration and critical infrastructure protection. Over the years, the District and The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey have deepened more than 35 miles of shipping channels to accommodate the large container ships that dominate worldwide shipping today.
