Planning for the 2014 PIANC World Congress continues - Kick-Off Event in S.F.!

A Kick-Off Event for the 2014 PIANC World Congress was held in San Francisco last month and drew a stellar crowd! The purpose of the event was to bring together local professionals in all aspects of navigation, ports, waterways and the environment from the private sector, government and academia to raise awareness and build support for the 2014 World Congress (which the U.S. Section of PIANC will host in June of 2014, in San Francisco).

Dredging 2012 Specialty Conference a Success

The Dredging 2012 Specialty Conference was held October 22-25 in San Diego, CA, jointly sponsored by the U.S. Section of PIANC (the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure) and ASCE's Institute for Coasts, Oceans, Ports, and Rivers (COPRI). The conference featured over two hundred technical presentations on a wide range of navigation and dredging related topics organized around six technical tracks.

Overall, the conference included more than 600 attendees drawn from over twenty-five countries, including 145 PIANC "young professionals." The Honorable Jo Ellen Darcy, Assistant Secretary of the Army (Civil Works), gave the opening keynote.

Michael Leone Appointed PIANC USA Commissioner

Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Michael A. Leone, who was appointed by The Honorable Jo-Ellen Darcy, PIANC USA Chair, on 7 January 2013 as our newest PIANC USA Commissioner. Mr. Leone is recently retired as Port Director of the Massachusetts Port Authority and has served as Chairman of the Board for the American Association of Port Authorities (AAPA) twice (2003-2004 and 2009-2010). We look forward to working with him on the Commission as we re-energize our work with the ports community and gear up for the 2014 Congress in San Francisco.

PIANC USA Leadership Navigates Training for New Colombia Chapter

Lillian Almodovar, member of the U.S. Section PIANC and PIANC's International Co-Operation Commission (CoCom), led a U.S. Section PIANC effort to organize a series of November 2012 seminars and training activities in Bogota and Cartagena to support the new PIANC Colombia section.

The General Maritime Directorate of Colombia (DIMAR), which heads the Colombia section, had requested assistance from PIANC on the topic of risk assessment for navigation and ports. PIANC USA suggested the possibility of bringing a team of international experts to discuss this topic with DIMAR representatives and at the same time provide a briefing on PIANC's capabilities and operations.

4th YPCom Biennial Technical Visit to the Panama Canal Third Set of Locks

The Young Professional Commission is heading to Panama for its 4th Biennial Technical Visit, July 8 – 9, 2013. Located at the Panama Canal Third Set of Locks, the day's activities include technical presentations by the Panama Canal Authority, Panama Canal designers and constructors, technical visits to the Pacific and Atlantic Locks construction sites, and networking opportunities with YPs from around the world. PORTS '13 Student Paper Competition

Papers Due April 1, 2013

In order to continue raising student awareness in the field, the ASCE/COPRI Ports 2013 Conference will have its second student paper contest on Tuesday, August 27, 2013. The eight best papers will be selected for presentation at the conference, with prizes for the first, second and third place. Additionally, the top eight authors will receive admission to the Ports Conference as well as other special student events.

Topics should be in the general field of COPRI, including coastal, environmental, general, civil, geotechnical, ocean, structural, and transportation engineering. Papers are due on April 1, 2013, with a page limit of 8 pages (12 point font). The selection of the best 8 papers will be made by May 15, 2013. Young Professionals at Dredging 2012

There was a great turnout of Young Professionals at the Dredging 2012 Conference in San Diego last October, with the YPs comprising a quarter of the total attendees. The conference provided many opportunities for the YPs to network, including an outdoor “Meet & Greet” and a Networking Happy Hour in San Diego’s historic Gaslamp District. The YP program also included a poster session for university students to show off and discuss their research to industry experts.

"Values of Inland Waterways" Topic of Working Group 139 Meeting in Ghent

PIANC InCom Working Group 139 met in Ghent in late October to discuss the preparation and writing of its report "Values of Inland Waterways." The working group's objective is to gain greater insight into the benefits and values of waterways for society. The group reported that it continues to make progress on the report and associated case studies.

PIANC Announces "Working with Nature" Certificate of Recognition and Award

Since 2008, PIANC's "Working with Nature" initiative has promoted environmentally-conscious navigation infrastructure projects. In order to recognize these projects, PIANC has announced the "Working with Nature" Certificate of Recognition and the "Working with Nature" Award. The first "Working with Nature" Award will be presented at the 2014 PIANC World Congress in San Francisco, California. USACE Retiree Bruce McCartney Wins 2013 Hans Albert Einstein Award

COPRI is pleased to announce the recipient of the 2013 Hans Albert Einstein Award is Mr. Bruce L. McCartney, P.E., D.NE, M.ASCE, for his innovative work in sediment transport and practicing engineering. Mr. McCartney had a distinguished thirty-one year career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and is a former Chair of COPRI's Waterways Committee.

Book Review: Jan van 't Hoff and Art Nooy van der Kolff release new Hydraulic Fill Manual

Planning, designing and constructing a land reclamation using hydraulic fill is a subject that has long been overlooked in the literature of dredging. After several years of development with contributions from a multitude of engineers, the Hydraulic Fill Manual has arrived – guided into existence under the stewardship of CIRIA (Construction Industry Research and Information Association) and CUR Building & Infrastructure and two editors/experts in the field, Jan van 't Hoff and Art Nooy van der Kolff.

Join the CMTS in a National Discussion of e-Navigation

As a follow-up to last year's e-Navigation Strategic Action Plan, the Committee on the Marine Transportation System (CMTS) is conducting a national, online dialogue regarding e-Navigation. The CMTS would like to hear from its partners and stakeholders regarding the implementation of this e-Navigation Action Plan. PIANC Members Inducted to ACOPNE

The Academy of Coastal, Ocean, Port & Navigation Engineers (ACOPNE) held their eighth induction ceremony last October as part of the Dredging 2012 conference held in San Diego, CA. Five more Diplomates were inducted, all of whom are PIANC members. Additionally, PIANC member Billy Edge was honored with a service award for his time working on the ACOPNE Board and as its first President at the ceremony.

ASCE Releases Manual of Practice 124 - Inland Navigation: Channel Training Works

Inland Navigation: Channel Training Works is one of the newest Manuals of Practice (MOP) released by ASCE Publications. This new Manual of Practice, MOP 124, focuses on training structures used in open-river channels with flow in one direction. Topics include: sediment management in river channels; evolution of training works in the United States; training structure types and layout; dikes; revetments; other types of training works; case studies; costs; environmental design; model studies; performance evaluation and inspection; and repair techniques.
