Remembering PIANC Coastal Engineer Thorndike Saville, Jr.

Distinguished coastal engineer and longtime PIANC member Thorndike Saville, Jr. died peacefully on November 5, 2014 in Washington, D.C. Saville led an accomplished career in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, working for the Beach Erosion Board and then the Coastal Engineering Research Board. He was a leader in the field of coastal engineering, a husband and father of three, and a consistent presence in the PIANC community.

Dredging 2015 Call for Abstracts

The Dredging 2015 conference will be accepting abstracts in December 2014. “Moving and Managing Sediments” is the theme for next year’s conference, which will include presentations on all types of dredging projects from navigation channel deepening and maintenance, to environmental restoration, to the development of new ports and marinas. The deadline for abstract submissions is January 15, 2015.

Smart Rivers 2015 Call for Abstracts

PIANC-SMART Rivers 2015 will take place in Buenos Aires, Argentina on September 7-11, 2015. If you wish to send in an abstract for this highly interesting event, please download the Call for Papers and send in your contribution before January 1, 2015. Abstracts must be written in English and limited to 500-750 words and they shall not include illustrations. You can submit your abstract through the application form on the website.

2014 PIANC World Congress Photos

PIANC USA successfully hosted the 33rd PIANC World Congress in June 2014 in San Francisco, California, gathering more than 760 attendees. The Congress is held every four years in one of PIANC's member countries in order to present and discuss topics relevant to the waterborne transport infrastructure sector. The PIANC Young Professionals Commission (YP-Com) has shown impressive growth internationally. The 18th YP-Com meeting featured the appointment of new delegates and a new YP-Com Secretary. The Commission held a successful meeting in Singapore with aims to establish a permanent Young Professionals (YP) group in that country. PIANC Japan is hosting the first YP-Com Asian Seminar in December to promote YP networks in Asia.

MarCom Working Group 158 Releases New Report

The Working Group report of MarCom 158, “Masterplans for the Development of Existing Ports,” has been released and is available on the PIANC website. For PIANC members, the report is free on the Members Only pages at http://www.pianc.org/members/membersonly/membersonly.php. Look under "Free Technical Reports." For non-members, the report is available in the download shop at http://www.pianc.org/technicalreportsbrowseall.php. Look under "MarCom."

PIANC Working Group InCom 173 Meeting and Site Visit in Panama

Members of PIANC Working Group InCom 173, “Rolling Gates and Movable Bridges – Mechanical and Electrical Lessons Learned,” met in Panama City, Panama on September 9 and 11, 2014. The group conducted site visits at the Panama Canal on September 10 and 11. The site visits were hosted and conducted by the Panama Canal Authority. The group visited Gatun Lock on September 10, where they were able to view the four new rolling gates as well as others awaiting installation. They viewed the new rolling gate machinery storage buildings, new Pacific lock construction and the Miraflores lock on September 11.

ASCE presents River Information Services Webinar

The American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) will present a live webinar December 12, 2014 titled “River Information Services: Basics of RIS and Plans for U.S. Implementation.” The webinar will cover the basic concepts of River Information Services (RIS), the plans for RIS implementation in the U.S. and its relationship with e-Navigation. The registration deadline for this course is December 9th. See the flyer for more information.
