Vice President, Moffatt & Nichol

Mark Pirrello is the Vice President and a Director of Moffatt & Nichol, based in Raleigh, North Carolina. With extensive experience in the coastal and water resources engineering field, Mark has been with Moffatt & Nichol for over two decades, beginning as a Senior Engineer in their Greater Tampa Bay area office from 2002 to 2016, focusing on waterfront and marina development projects in Florida and the wider Caribbean Basin. He then advanced to Senior Project Manager at the company, transitioning to Moffatt & Nichol’s Raleigh office, where he contributes to numerous impactful coastal and waterfront development projects along the East and Gulf Coasts. Mark currently leads the Coastal/Water Resources division in the Carolinas, overseeing a wide range of engineering initiatives since 2025.

Mark’s career began in the early 1990s with roles at Michael Baker International and PBS&J International Inc., where he gained valuable experience in coastal flood hazard analyses and coastal projects in Northeast and Gulf coasts as well as Great Lakes and Pacific Northwest regions. His technical expertise is rooted in his academic background, holding a Master of Engineering in Coastal Engineering from the University of Florida and a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering from Lafayette College.

A recognized leader in the waterfront development and marina planning and design, Mark has contributed to several key publications, including co-authoring and editing editions of the ASCE Manual 50 on “Planning and Design Guidelines for Small Craft Harbors.” He has also been involved with several PIANC Working Groups, such as WG 177, WG 134, and WG 234, contributing to the advancement of design and operational guidelines for marinas and superyacht facilities. Additionally, Mark has served as a lecturer for the Docks and Marina Short Course at the University of Wisconsin, sharing his wealth of knowledge with the next generation of engineers.
