In Remembrance: Bob Nichol
PIANC USA gives its respects to the late Robert D. Nichol, former PIANC USA Commissioner. During his career, Nichol served as Chairman and former President and CEO of Moffatt & Nichol, an industry leading waterfront engineering consulting firm. He passed away at the age of 84.

In Remembrance: Orville Magoon
PIANC USA honors the late Orville Tyler Magoon, former PIANC USA life member and Chief of the Coastal Engineering Branch of the Planning Division of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), South Pacific Division. He passed at the age of 87 on March 19 in Santa Barbara, surrounded by his wife and children.

US Young Professional Matthew McCarty Wins the De Paepe-Willems Award
Matthew McCarty, P.E., S.E. is the winner of this year’s PIANC USA De Paepe-Willems Award for his technical paper on “Large Diameter Fiber Reinforced Polymer Monopile Dolphin Systems for Ferry Berths.” The paper explores the benefits of composite-material monopile dolphins over conventional timber pile dolphins for ferry boat berthing operations. McCarty will present his winning paper to members of the PIANC Annual General Assembly on May 18 in Bruges, Belgium.

PIANC USA Technical Breakfast at the Ports Conference in New Orleans
Join us for a free technical and networking breakfast during the Ports 2016 Conference on the morning of Tuesday June 14th where the PIANC Working Group 181 members will give a presentation on “The State and Perspectives of Waterborne Transport Infrastructure Worldwide.” The morning will kick off with a networking event with a light breakfast (and plenty of coffee). Major General Donald E. (Ed) Jackson Jr., USACE Deputy Commanding General for Civil and Emergency Operations (DCG-CEO), will then introduce US Commissioners Nicholas Pansic, Mike Leone and Ron Coles, who will speak about the status of Working Group 181’s research and analysis.
PIANC U.S. to Host SMART Rivers 2017 in Pittsburgh
The organizing committee of the SMART Rivers 2017 Conference has selected the city of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania to host the conference in September 2017. The committee expressed interest in returning the conference “to its roots” by holding the event in the same location of the very first Smart Rivers Conference in 2005. Jim McCarville, formerly of the Port of Pittsburgh Commission and one of the SMART Rivers founding fathers, will serve as the conference chair.
Proceedings for the Dredging 2015 Conference are Now Available
This past year, PIANC USA and the Coasts, Oceans, Ports and Rivers Institute (COPRI) of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) hosted Dredging 2015, a four-day technical specialty conference which brought together more than 325 professionals and practitioners from around the world to discuss a variety of dredging-related topics. The theme for Dredging 2015, Moving and Managing Sediments, included presentations on all types of dredging projects from navigation channel deepening and maintenance to environmental restoration to the development of new ports and marinas.

PIANC USA is sponsoring a networking and tour event for young professionals on June 22 – 24, 2016, at various river infrastructure facilities and development sites in Washington, DC and Baltimore, MD. This event will occur following the Transportation Research Board (TRB) – US Committee on the Marine Transportation System (CMTS) Conference titled “From Sail to Satellite: Delivering Solutions for Tomorrow’s Marine Transportation Systems” (June 21 – 23), which will also take place in Washington, DC.
MarCom Working Group 144 and InCom Working Group 151 Release Reports
The Working Group Reports of Marcom 144, “Classification of Soils and Rocks for the Maritime Dredging Process,” and InCom 151 (Part II), “Design of Lock Gates under Seismic Actions,” have been released and are available on the PIANC website. For PIANC members, the reports are free on the Members Only pages. Look under “Free Technical Reports.” For non-members, the reports are available in the download shop. Look under “MarCom” and “InCom.”
