Commissions

PIANC is home to Technical and non-technical Commissions that oversee important work executed by Technical Working Groups. Both the Commissions and Working Groups are comprised of experts from member countries who gather, analyze, and consolidate state-of-the-practice solutions.

The Technical Commissions within PIANC are:

  • Maritime Navigation (MarCom)
  • Inland Navigation (InCom)
  • Recreational Navigation (RecCom)
  • Environmental (EnviCom)

The non-technical Commissions include:

  • International Cooperation (CoCom)
  • Young Professionals (YP-Com)
  • Promotion (ProCom)

Working Groups

Working Groups are initiated and overseen by their respective Technical Commission. Dozens of Working Groups are active at a time. Working Groups are made up of PIANC members, who apply through their national section, then collaborate to research the Working Group topic and draft the resulting technical report.

Working Group examples include Fender Guidelines, Beneficial Sediment Use, Best Practices in Planning Inland Waterways Multimodal Platforms, and Implications of Invasive Alien Species for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure.

The reports prepared by these Working Groups are available FREE for members and for purchase by non-members at PIANC.org. They are a highly respected, advanced technical resource for governments, companies, and industry associations alike.
