Waterborne transport infrastructure projects are becoming ever more complex and subject to critical time and budgetary constraints. Infrastructure owners can optimize project value through contractor participation in project planning and design – a strategy known as Early Contractor Involvement (ECI). PIANC USA recently hosted a webinar sharing the secrets of ECI success. In this one-hour webinar, presenters Kenneth Willems, John Lally, and Matt Trowbridge walked viewers through practical guidance, hallmarks of effective ECI implementation, and how ECI may benefit not just your project, but the waterborne transportation industry as a whole. While ECI is implemented by infrastructure owners towards contractors, it can also be expanded to consultants, subcontractors and other stakeholders – making this topic relevant for any and all interested industry practitioners. View the presentation from this one-time-only event here: Mr. Willems is managing director at the consultancy firm Vuentica, founding partner of consultancy firm Inframara, and acted as chairman of the PIANC working group on ECI. Before becoming an independent consultant, he spent most of his career at DEME Group in various management roles across Europe, Middle East, and America before leading its Risk Management department. Kenneth has extensive experience leading multidisciplinary teams in the design and construction of major maritime and offshore infrastructure projects including the Suez Canal, Panama Canal, offshore wind farms, container terminals, and LNG ports. He has a wide range of experience in early contractor involvement, project management, risk management, and contract management. Mr. Lally is the CEO and principal engineer of Lally LLC. In a career coupled as a consulting engineer and marine contractor, John has 33 years of practical experience in the engineering, management and construction of coastal protection, marine infrastructure, and environmental remediation projects. As one of the first coastal engineers in Louisiana in the early 1990s, John began to address large-scale coastal restoration efforts there, designing in total over 48 miles of varied shoreline erosion control projects to protect in excess of 56,000 acres of barrier islands and wetlands. Understanding the capabilities of advanced marine construction technologies, John has had the good fortune to work with several leading American and European dredging and marine contractors, and since 2008 actively collaborates with owners, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams through his firm to achieve successful project outcomes. Mr. Trowbridge is a senior structural manager and vice president at Moffatt & Nichol. He has extensive experience leading multidisciplinary teams in the design and construction of marine terminals and major port infrastructure projects including offshore wind ports, container terminals, and liquid, gas and bulk material terminals. He spent years as a structural inspector and underwater engineer diver and is experienced in evaluating the condition of marine structures. He has represented the owner during major construction projects and worked closely with contractors, stakeholders, and engineers to resolve construction issues and deliver projects.
